Why Batteries Should Be Components, Not Expiration Dates

Every rechargeable cell loses capacity. The interesting question is what a company decides to do about it.

A battery is a component. Components can be replaced.

A rechargeable battery is a consumable. It has a chemistry, a cycle count, and a service life. None of that is a defect, and none of it is new. It is the most predictable part of a modern electronic product.

What is less predictable is how the industry chose to respond. In many categories, the answer became: seal the product, and let the battery decide when the whole device is finished. The rest of the hardware can still be excellent — drivers, radios, enclosures, acoustics — and it goes in a drawer anyway.

A component is not a countdown

Treating the battery as a component changes what has to be true at the earliest stage of design. Service becomes a requirement rather than an accommodation, and the product architecture has to hold that requirement without compromising performance.

A battery should be treated as a component — not an expiration date.

That constraint is harder. It is also the difference between a product designed for a purchase and a product designed for ownership.

What we will and will not publish

We will describe our philosophy openly. We will publish specifications when they are final and verified. We will not publish estimates, projections, or numbers that have not survived testing — and we will not describe internal engineering that is not ours to hand over.

Evidence over adjectives. That standard applies to what we say as much as to what we build.
